After a number of exceptionally dry years, the very wet winter of 1993/4 came as a great relief and replaced valuable water reserves. March and April were beautifully warm, rapidly bringing on the development of the vines. The weather for the remainder of spring and summer was ideal with the vines developing under perfect conditions. The Vintage started on the 29th September with the grapes in better condition than had been seen for many years. The vintage took place with warm dry days and cool nights.
The color of this great Vintage is intense and it has rich and concentrated flavors with a most distinctive flowery bouquet. It has great potential for long maturation. The lots from the Rio Torto provided some of the finest wines for the Vintage blend, in particular the wines from Quinta da Madalena, which make up the main part of this Vintage.

An under-rated producer, Smith-Woodhouse has turned out a port with an impressively saturated dark ruby/purple color. This powerful port is moderately sweet, forward, rich, and full-bodied, with nicely integrated alcohol and tannin.
