The winter and spring of 1985 was extremely wet, with a cold spell in May, and by June the vines were some three weeks behind normal development. Hot and dry weather in July and August brought development back to normal. The summer-like weather continued from early September right up to the vintage, thus ensuring an
excellent final ripening period, and was only broken by one night’s refreshing rain which softened the skins and ensured maximum colour extraction during fermentation. The Vintage took place under ideal climatic conditions.

A rich Vintage characterised for its luscious fruit and round tannins. This wine has lovely violet aromas, showing plenty of grip and power.

My experience with Smith-Woodhouse is limited. Is the 1985 the sleeper of the vintage? An astonishing amount of creamy, black-cherry and chocolate-scented fruit fills the nose. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is loaded with extract, great length, and has super finish with plenty of fruit and tannin in proper balance.
