Touriga Nacional is one of the two most important grape varieties for the Vesuvio red wine. These vines are grown in the Quinta Nova vineyard located at 450 metres altitude, with a fine westerly aspect. This area of the estate was acquired for Vesuvio by Dona Antonia Ferreira in the mid-19th century. Little could she have imagined how valuable these high vineyards would be for the estate’s red wines in the 21st century.

The 2019 Tinto (Quinta do Vesúvio), the estate red, is a 51/45 blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca with a dollop of Tinta Amarela, all aged for 14 months in French oak (80% new). It comes in at 14.1% alcohol. As compared to its little brother, the Pombal, which was quite fresh in its own right, this was sourced from higher-altitude vines. It has more bite to the finish in terms of pure power but also more crispness. It's elegant and refined. The flavor profile at the moment is a little dominated by wood, but that will get better in time. It should age well, so there is no rush. This has become a consistent and excellent bottling.

Cellar Selection

The estate wine from Vesúvio, one of the grandest vineyards in the Douro Valley, this has power and density, shaped by the mineral texture. At the same time, the wine's dense black fruits promise an impressive future. Drink this great wine from 2025.

A compact, minerally red, with notes of wood smoke and hot stone underscoring mouthwatering flavors of crushed blackberry, violet, dried mint and ground white pepper. Delivers dense tannins, which are tightly meshed to the profile and firm the racy finish. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Amarela. Best from 2024 through 2029. 1,600 cases made, 50 cases imported.
