We had a very dry and mild winter and spring, and by late summer the vines were in need of water to keep maturations on track. Fortunately, the virtual absence of rain from May to late August was counterbalanced by cooler summer conditions, which attenuated the lack of water. Fortunately, some rainfall in late August and ideal conditions through September, led to a balanced ripening of the various components of the grapes – reflected in the excellent balance between acidity and sugar levels. Yields were very close to average after the two very short years of 2017 and 2018. The grapes entered the winery in excellent condition with well-balanced ripeness. Freshness and vibrancy are the signature of the 2019 wines.

This is a perfumed, juicy wine. Its tannins give structure in the background and support the juicy black fruits. The wine, a blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Amarela, is the second wine of Quinta do Vesúvio.

This sleek, compact red centers around fine, dense tannins, which are tightly meshed to aromas and flavors of crushed blackberry, black tea leaf, graphite and rich hints of mineral and mocha. Racy and floral on the finish, opening in the glass and on the palate. Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Amarela. Best from 2023 through 2032.

The 2019 Pombal do Vesúvio (Quinta do Vesúvio) is a blend of 55% Touriga Franca, 40% Touriga Nacional and Tinta Amarela for the rest, aged for eight months in used French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Spicy, fresh and beautifully constructed, this has fine depth, better intensity of flavor and a backbone. The tannins are ripe, though. This can be drunk now, but it should also age pretty well and develop. This is a very nice value.
