While 2011 was another exceptionally dry year, there was plenty of rainfall from October to December 2010. This abundant autumn/winter rainfall created good water reserves deep in the Douro subsoil, critical to the vines’ development. April and May were hotter than usual, which combined with some rain to create humid conditions giving rise to fungal infestations and resulting in some loss of production. This crop reduction meant that 2011 was one of the smallest years in recent memory — 15% below the average. After an early budburst everything indicated an early vintage. Fortunately the weather came to the rescue and timely rainfall paving the way for an ideal final ripening stage. Clear skies and fine, warm weather continued throughout the harvest.

Quinta de Roriz 2011 Vintage Port is the first to be made by Prats & Symington, who purchased the quinta in 2009. The varietals in the blend include 42% Touriga Nacional and 28% Touriga Franca, as well as two more unusual but classic Port grapes:  18% Tinta Francisca and 12% Sousão.

This shows a tight beam of cream and spice, focusing the lush flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, plum confit and violet. The lilting finish presents fig and date notes to the dark chocolate accents.

This structured, dark, brooding wine is closed up at this stage. It's a wine with serious tannins, powerful spiciness and plenty of concentration. A dry core is surrounded by the fruit, hinting at potentially rich texture.

There is a slight rancio character on the Quinta do Roriz, with raisin, a touch of prune and tobacco. The palate is smooth and voluptuous on the entry with layers of cassis, boysenberry and salted licorice. It is very refined and focused with a mouth-lacquering, almost viscous finish. It has good potential, but needs to show more flair.
