The 2003’s are noted for their traditional tannic structure and bright, ripe fruit. It was a classic declared Vintage year with an ideal growing season comprised of beneficial winter rains, good flowering and the heat common to the Douro in the summer. Roriz has particularly bright fruit and excellent structure so it should age for decades.

The combination of small grapes and traditional foot treading has produced a wine of an intense purple, almost black colour. A  very pronounced nose of cinnamon and violets with mineral notes. On the palate, black chocolate stands out. Mature tannins, a bit peppery crossed with minerals, which express the unique terroir of Quinta de Roriz. Vinha Velha 35%, Touriga Nacional 28%, Tinta Roriz 22%, Tinta Barroca 9%, Sousão 6%

Aromas of licorice, blackberries and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate, with light sweetness and an incredible core of gorgeous raspberry fruit. Long finish.  –JS

The vineyard produced fruit with an explosive power in 2003, layers of black cherry, blueberry, blackberry and esteva, all concentrated and fresh without a hint of super-ripeness. Pull back the purple velvet curtains of that youthful fruit and there's a substantial tannic structure, a gritty, complex bitter chocolate flavor that holds the fruit in play for over a minute after each sip. Thoroughly delicious, with a long life ahead.
